Project Butterfly Earings

stop frame video, collaboration with my mother, Dorothy Ansley-Smith, 2013

My mother teaches biology. Among many things, she enjoys raising endangered butterflies, and then introduces them back into the environment. When the Monarch crystalizes turned black, she gently transferred a pair of crystalizes to a pair of earrings. I sat still, wearing the earrings until I heard the butterflies chewing their way out. At that point, Mom started taking photos which I later edited together. After their star role, the butterflies were carefully placed outside. They said adieu to the performance world, went through the process of pumping blood into their wings, and took their first flight.
